in short

MOED, studio for concept, styling and design, is placed in Teteringen, in the municipality of Breda, in the Netherlands. We work for little companies in the neighbourhood but also for big companies, crossing the borders of the Netherlands and Europe.

MOED is formed by Monique van de Kerkhof, stylist and concept developer, and Ed van Engelen, industrial designer.

who we are

We started working together in 2009 after years of living together but having separate careers. After 20 years in the care for people with a visual and mental disability Monique made a complete switch in 2007, which lead to a successful graduation as (interior) stylist and concept developer at the Academie Artemis in Rotterdam in 2009. In the past years she developed her graphic design skills as well.

After his graduation at the Design Academy Eindhoven in 1988 Ed has been working as a designer for international companies for more than 20 years, mostly in garden furniture related companies: Flair Plastics, Curver Lawn Comfort/ Rubbermaid and until 2009 Haans, where he was responsible for the designs of in– and outdoor products but also for some of the booth and showroom designs.

In this field he has won some international job awards and many of his designs have been commercially successful in the past years. In 2006 and 2007 he joined the Dutch project "Dutch design meets bamboo" and designed a bamboo table and dividing screen. A few years ago he was asked to join the exhibition Rethinking bamboo at the Beijing International Design Triennial 2011 with that same bamboo screen.

Except for garden furniture he also has a lot of experience on designing interior products like upholstery, cabinet systems, lighting, tables and interior accessories. He knows the ins and outs of all kind of materials and can be involved in the process from the first sketch as far as the last specifications in the factories.

what we represent

MOED represents the Dutch down-to-earth attitude and strength, without any fuss, just fully go for it and don’t be afraid of new challenges and new ways to reach your goal. The name MOED is not just the first part of both our first names, but it also means courage.
Not only do we extend our own borders, we also encourage our clients to extend their borders, let go of their ideas about the appearance of a product (whatever that is) and give us the opportunity to get to work with it.

Our basic thought always is the identity of you, our client: who you are, what your product is, whom you want to reach, how you want to reach them and -always important- which means you have.
But we can also look further than the existing situation of the client: where does he or she stand, who else is busy in this field and what is coming up.
A new product line, restaurant, corporate identity, style of advertising, web style: concept development is the starting point of every new product. It's a proces with multiple phases, always starting with a fundamental research on what is happening now and what is going to happen in the future: within society in general and for the relevant market segment in particular. We offer the complete process, from forecast as far as the final design, but also one or more phases can be executed. Always in close cooperation with the client and meeting his needs and possibilities.
We are able to research and analyse the upcoming (design) trends in general. Therefore we visit each year several national and international fairs and design weeks and keep up with digital and non digital information.
We always picture our research results, using just a single word to support the image, from abstract moodboards to concrete image compilations, whatever is necessary or is being asked for. This way we can also make a full presentation to use within your company. Image is our most important means of communication: no extensive research reports but expressive images, supported by a strong but short verbal explanation.

To translate all the collected information into a product – whatever kind of state it will be in- is our strength. Therefore we always collaborate closely wíth our clients and not from some island fór them.
Measure, shape and colour are the starting point of every product, but the details are crucial for the final result: a product, not only worked out technically well, but also appealing to the consumer because of it's appearance, convenience and comfortableness.
Beside that it's important in industrial designing to take along factors like construction, production method, price and transport in the design. We are pre-eminently specialized in this and are able to translate our knowledge and years of experience into successfully selling products.
Over the years we have had a great and varied design assignment of:

  • outdoor products: outdoor furniture like tables, chairs, lounge sets, etc; garden ware; outdoor kitchens, …

  • interior products: furniture like tables, cabinets, chairs, upholstery etc; lifestyle accessories; lighting; table ware; plastic moulded products, ...

  • graphic design: patterns; textiles; logo’s; corporate designs; websites; catalogues; infographics, …

With interior styling we focus on the project market. The atmosphere of a shop, office, booth or restaurant, the entrance of a company, but also the arrangement of an outdoor area are the result of the use of specific colours, shapes, materials and patterns. In the past years we have done the interior styling for several clients, from company canteens or schools to shops and exhibition booths. Not only do we make the design, we can also coordinate the preparation and execution of the project.

A magazine publication, catalogue, advertisement, billboard: just some examples of images you spot daily. Some of them glamorous, obviously being styled, others like they are taken at your kitchen table this morning. Like, because the reality is different. What one sees is carefully tuned in to what you want to send out, whom you want to reach and in what way you want to achieve that. It's never a coincidence, never just like that. Within photo styling we cover the broad range of products and interiors.
